Florentino Perez, a construction magnet, Spain’s biggest employer, and a man who found time in his busy schedule to embark on the roots and branches, restructuring of the club’s finances. When Perez took over, the club had debts of around $200 million. Within a year the deficit had been cleared. With some money left over and a little help from some friendly banks, Perez went shopping for the world’s best and most commercially attractive players. He right away fulfilled his election promise by alluring Portugal’s Luis Figo from arch-rivals Barcelona. Next on the list was Zidane. Further $52 million secured the signature of the Brazilian striker Ronaldo. It was the policy to success.

Perez grew up watching the majestic Real Madrid destroy the rest of Europe and he wants to recreate those memories again. “I was four the first time I went to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. My memory of it is hazy. I remember everything being huge and very impressive. I was amazed at how high the ball would go. My father was always passionate about Real Madrid. At the time of the first European Cup games, he and a couple of friends would drive around Europe, following them. So this passion for Real Madrid was something I grew up with.”

Perez did things that nobody even dared to dream of. In his second campaign he signed big names like Cristiano, Kaka, Benzema, Alonso, Albiol in one season. Mourinho was hired to lead the ship and the second version of Galacticos was on the rise. There is Madridismo in everything he does. He is a civil engineer by occupation and he is handling Real Madrid just like a building, creating it so high that its untouchable.

“ Real Madrid is eleven artists and eleven warriors. It is envy and admiration, it is relevant whether you hate or love it. Real Madrid does not leave one unconcerned. It is values and ideas, compromise and union. It is dreams and reality. There is one Real Madrid and there are many. Real Madrid is every person who makes it a part of their life, those who can see and do not stop watching, those who want to see but cannot watch. It is everyone and no one. It is more than football. It is sometimes an excuse and other times a reason. It was monarchy, republic, dictatorship and never stopped being democracy. It was first and it was second, it is leader without being champion. It is sporting heroes and kids from Madrid. It is front page news, hours of radio and television, it is the eternal debate and the nonexistent conclusion. It is, above all, ambition. It is the grandfather we all wish to have. Real Madrid was yesterday, it is today and it will be tomorrow. Real Madrid are words that I still do not know how to express.
